As the final three weeks of summer approach, the Birmingham Zoo is offering a variety of specials, opportunities, and new offerings.
New VR Film at Zoo Features Dolphins
Jump into the Red Sea and swim with dolphins in a spectacular new VR film at Your Birmingham Zoo. A third Virtual Reality film was just added for your enjoyment. Dolphins of the Reef explores the unique bond between a pod of bottle-nosed dolphins and their surrounding coral reefs, uncovering remarkable behavior and conservation challenges.
Other VR films now showing include The Great Migration and Gorilla Trek. The Virtual Reality experience is air conditioned and located in the Trails of Africa next to the Predator Building. The films are approximately six minutes long and are $5 for members and $7 for guests.
Big Machine Petting Zoo – Saturday, Aug. 2 (FREE EVENT)
From giant construction equipment from Thompson Tractor to fire trucks and other safety machines from the City of Birmingham and Jefferson County, come to the inaugural “Big Machine Petting Zoo” at Your Birmingham Zoo. Big Machine Petting Zoo is on Saturday, August 2 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Expect a variety of giant equipment to explore in the parking lot before heading into your Zoo for the final weekend before school starts. Watch for more details. This is a free event and great fun before heading in to visit the animals inside of your Zoo.
Summer’s Last Roar – July 26 and 27, August 2 and 3
The final two weeks of summer will have everyone going wild before school starts. During the final two weekends of summer, everyone enters for the price of a child no matter their age (although under two are always free). Come have one last roar before the school bell rings.
Adult Volunteer Applications Now Being Accepted
Attention animal lovers over 18: The Birmingham Zoo is now accepting applications for adult volunteers. Applications are online at BirminghamZoo.com and feature a variety of opportunities available for adults including: Guest Service Volunteers to engage with guests; Conservations, Science, and Research Volunteers to assist with scientific inquiry and conservation efforts; Animal Crew to work with the animals; and Interpretation and Learning Volunteers to help share the stories of the animals and conservation.
Homewood Day at the Zoo – Saturday, July 19
Homewood residents will receive discount admission on Saturday, July 19 with a valid ID. Guests 13 and over can enter for $15.95 plus tax. Children two to 12 are $11.95 plus tax. Admission for children under two is always free.
Barons and Birmingham Zoo Collaborate
Zoo Member Night at the Barons – Friday, July 25 at 7:00 p.m. – For Fireworks Friday, the Birmingham Barons will be playing the Montgomery Biscuits at Regions Field. Birmingham Zoo members will receive BOGO admission (buy one, get one free) by showing their zoo membership information. Fireworks display after the game.
Ambassador Animals at the Ballgame – Sunday, July 27 at 4:00 p.m. – Come see some of your favorite Ambassador Animals at the start of the Barons and Montgomery Biscuit game. They will be on the field prior to the game and a zoo representative will throw out the first pitch.
Barons Day at the Zoo – Sunday, August 3 – Barons season ticket holders will have half price admission to the Birmingham Zoo. The Barons are producing a video highlighting their favorite flamingo – Baron. The team donated dirt from Regions Field to the flamingo habitat and months later a special flamingo was born and we named him Baron. He is the youngest and tallest of the flamingos and sports the number 14 on his leg.
