Group or Community Volunteers

056-junior-league-garden-volunteersThe Birmingham Zoo welcomes corporate, school and other volunteer groups to help fulfill the Zoo’s project needs. All group volunteers must be 14 years or older. The Birmingham Zoo requires at least one adult chaperone for every 10 volunteers under the age of 18.

Group volunteers are typically scheduled for projects/shifts lasting up to four hours. Most Zoo projects can accommodate a group size of 25 or fewer.

Project Categories

Outdoor Projects  Raking leaves, moving substrate (soil, sand, rocks, gravel), planting shrubs, flowers, etc. Each project will vary depending on the needs of the Zoo and the interest of the group.

Indoor Projects  Preparing materials for programs, sorting items for special events, stuffing membership or event bags, etc. The exact project will vary due to the time of year and needs of the Zoo.

Special Events  Helping the Zoo with event setup, greeting guests, manning craft and activity tables, providing event support, cleanup etc. Each year for Boo at the Zoo, sponsored by Wells Fargo (BATZ) and ZooLight Safari, sponsored by Wells Fargo the Birmingham Zoo asks for volunteers to make this a fun and exciting event. It takes about 100 volunteers (for BATZ) and 50 volunteers (for ZooLights) each night to help make this fun for the family and kids that come. WHAT  Party for the Planet

WHO  Birmingham Zoo and Turkey Creek Preserve

WHEN  Saturday, March 28, 2020

TIMES  Birmingham Zoo at 7:30am & Turkey Creek Nature Preserve at 9:00am



The Birmingham Zoo and Turkey Creek Nature Preserve are teaming up for this year’s Party for the Planet day of volunteer service on Saturday, March 28, 2020! We will be meeting at The Birmingham Zoo at 7:30am and beginning our day with a tour through our Alabama Wilds exhibit. From the zoo we will caravan (limited spaces may be provided by the zoo) to Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, arriving at 9am.

  • From there we will divide up into teams providing various services around Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, including but not limited to invasive species removal, plant nursery husbandry, trash clean up and tree planting! We will end the day with a BBQ cookout with food and drinks provided!
  • Sign up for the 7:30 slot if you would like to begin your day at the zoo with a complimentary tour or sign up for the 9:00 slot if you would like to meet us at Turkey Creek Nature Preserve!
  • This event is open for volunteers 16 years of age or older. If you have children/students under 16 please plan on attending and volunteering as a family/group!
