SLOTH ALERT: Reynardo, the Two-Toed Sloth, is Back on Public View after Three Years Behind-the-Scenes

Reynardo, the Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth, moved from a behind-the-scenes habitat in the Primates and South America Building this morning to a new home in the predator building, next door to Kodo, the red panda. He is on display just in time for Memorial Day Weekend.

Reynardo was born in 1990 and arrived at your Birmingham Zoo in 2016. He used to live with the tamarins, but after they started to build a family with babies, it was no longer suitable for him.  He has been off view for nearly three years and the Zoo is excited that he is now on view in the Predator Building. He will be delighted to see his fans again in his new home.

In addition to Reynardo, Zoo visitors will also see another familiar face that reemerged this week. Old Gregg, the alligator snapping turtle, was relocated back to the Alabama Stream in the children’s zoo after wintering in the rhino habitat.

For Memorial Day, veterans, active and retired military, plus up to six dependents get into the Birmingham Zoo for free.

  • The two-toed sloths have two toes on their front legs and three on their back legs.
  • Diet in the wild: Leaves, twigs, and flowers. Diet in the Zoo:  Fruit, vegetables, and biscuits
