Birmingham Zoo Receives Highest Charity Navigator Rating for Fifth Consecutive Year

The Birmingham Zoo is pleased to announce that it has received the highest rating of 4-stars from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator for the fifth consecutive year. This award is given for sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency. With an overall score of 94.4 out of 100, the Birmingham Zoo is one of only six nonprofits, 501(c)(3) organizations, in the Birmingham metropolitan area to receive this highly-coveted distinction and honor. In addition, the Birmingham Zoo is one of only six zoos and aquariums in the United States accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums to have received this award for the last five review years.

Receiving this 4-star rating indicates that an organization adheres to best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities, while consistently executing its mission in a fiscally responsible way. “Receiving this distinction from Charity Navigator for the fifth consecutive year distinguishes the Birmingham Zoo from other nonprofit organizations. In the final phase of the current Capital Campaign, this is a tremendous accomplishment as we narrow in on the $18 million goal,” says Vice President of Development, Karen Carroll. “We are always thankful for the Birmingham community and our donors, and are pleased to be able to demonstrate through this rating how seriously we take our governance and fiduciary responsibilities.”
