A Docent is a lead volunteer whose primary focus is on educating guests as it relates to the Zoo’s mission — inspiring curiosity and provoking thoughtful engagement towards conserving wild things and wild places. Docents commit to supporting Zoo-wide needs at the discretion of the Volunteer Department.
Each of our docents at The Birmingham Zoo commits to an engaging, in-depth training and 105 hours of volunteer service over the course of each year. Because of their commitment to the Zoo, docents offer a wealth of knowledge and leadership to new volunteers as well as guests on grounds and in the community.
