Birmingham Zoo Gator Giving Raising Funds to help AZA Partner, BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo

In response to the recent flooding and devastation in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Birmingham Zoo has created a fundraiser. As a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), the Birmingham Zoo is working with zoos throughout the country to assist our friends and colleagues at the Baton Rouge Zoo as they begin the cleanup process.

Over 20% of the 85 full-time and part-time staff employed at the Baton Rouge Zoo had significant damage to their homes and properties in the flood. Eight staff members, including curators, keepers, and their veterinarian lost everything. Phil Frost, the Director of the Baton Rouge Zoo, said in a letter to AZA Members, “Watching a curator, who has lost everything and is living with another employee, show up to work alongside the only two other keepers in his department who can get to work, becomes an incredible demonstration of true dedication to the care of our animals.”

In an effort to assist the Baton Rouge Zoo, the Birmingham Zoo has a special Gator Giving option available for patrons to symbolically adopt an alligator for $5. All proceeds will go towards helping those impacted at the Baton Rouge Zoo. As a thank you for the support, all donors will receive an alligator fact-sheet and printable photo.
