Digital Field Trips & Discovery Programs

Can’t make it to your Birmingham Zoo? That’s okay. We can still take you on an amazing virtual experience that will let you interact with your Birmingham Zoo in a whole new way! Our Digital Field Trips and Discovery programs allow you to learn from educators, talk to animal care professionals, practice community scientist experiments, and/or meet animals that call your Birmingham Zoo home.

Digital Field Trips

Digital field trips are guided tours through a specific section of Birmingham Zoo. Tours may include habitat chats, learning with natural materials, interactive student challenges, and more. Digital Field trips last 45-60 minutes.

Pricing is dependent upon the number of students experiencing the program

Up to 25 students: $125

26-150 students: $250

151+ students: $400

Digital Field Trip Options

Alabama Wilds Tour

Take a journey through your zoo’s Alabama Wilds trail, filled with animals that native to the great state of Alabama. Here, you can find animals such as black bears, otters, eagles, cranes, cougars, bobcats, endangered indigo snakes, and more. In our Alabama Wilds barn, there are goats, sheep, pigs, and even a donkey. Take this tour to see and learn about great Alabama animals!

Primates/South America Building Tour

Take a journey through your zoo’s Primates/South America building. Here are housed primates such as lemurs, Orangutans, cotton-top tamarins, and more. You will also find our friends from South America in this place, including Khan the Jaguar and Carlito the giant anteater. Take this tour to see and learn about amazing primates and other creatures from around the world!

Reptiles Building Tour

Take a journey through your zoo’s Reptile building. Here you’ll find snakes, lizards, turtles, skinks, and even a dragon! His name is Max and he’s a komodo dragon, the largest lizards in the world! Take this tour see and learn how amazing reptiles truly are!

Trails of Africa Tour

Take a journey through your zoos Trails of Africa. This trail houses some the world’s largest animals, including elephants and giraffes, alongside rhinoceroses, zebras, and more! Take this tour to see and learn about some of Africa’s most fascinating creatures!

Digital Discovery Programs

Digital Discovery Programs are live experiences led by a zoo educator from our Birmingham Zoo Learning Studio. These programs may include appearances by one or more of our Ambassador Animals. Digital Discovery Programs last 30-60 minutes

Rent a Community Scientist (Water Quality Assessments)

Curious about applying concepts such as population estimates, pollution, food chains, environmental assessment, abiotic factors, aquatic biodiversity, or adaptations to the real world? Why not rent out a citizen scientist to come to your school? In your allotted time, certified experts will bring equipment to demonstrate and coach EPA certified methods for assessing the health of nearby water bodies during water tests. This is also a great opportunity for certified Alabama Water Watch volunteers to borrow chemicals or equipment and gain an extra hand while conducting routine water chemistry or biotic index assessments at their local sites. Recommended for 3rd-12th grade or community volunteers.

Zoo Careers

During this program, students learn about the numerous and varied careers it takes to run a zoo, from animal care to special even, guest services to fundraising, and even maintenance and landscaping! Participants have an opportunity to meet a Zoo professional, hear their story, and ask any questions they may have. If you have more specific goals of your career or STEM fair, such as judging student work or presenting on a more specific topic, please notify education staff during booking. Ambassador animal presence is dependent on relevant terms and conditions such as room and group size. Recommended for all grade levels.

Reptilian Reputations to Fascination

Featuring live ambassador animals! Snakes, dinosaurs, and cool monsters-galore! We will dispel common myths and stereotypes, talk about the adaptations crucial to reptiles over the ages, and turn fear to fascination. Recommended for K-2nd grade.

Chomp, Chomp, Oh My!

Alligator or tiny snail— You’d be surprised who has the more vicious way to eat! Come on a journey where you will learn and see just who tops the food chain, who has the wildest way to eat, and what animals play important roles in the ecosystem, just by chowing down! Recommended for 3rd-5th grade

NEW! Amazing Alabama Animals

Featuring live ambassador animals! Alabama is America’s Amazon! Discover our state’s rich biodiversity and amazing animals from reptiles to birds to mammals. Students get to learn how animals use their adaptations to survive and how we can protect the wildlife that can be found in our backyard. Recommended for 3rd-5th grade.

Changing World, Changing Species

Featuring live ambassador animals! Our world is always changing, and all living things must adapt to survive. Recently, human impacts have begun influencing physical and/or behavioral changes in certain animal populations. Students will explore species that may or may not be adapting quickly enough to the changes in our modern world and what they can do to help. Recommended for 6th-12th grade
