The Birmingham Zoo has surpassed its all-time annual attendance record as of December 31, 2016, attracting 644,667 visitors. This marks the sixth year the Zoo has seen record-breaking attendance – last year’s record 576,974 visitors broke the previous year’s record when 574,581 guests passed through the gates. This also marks the first time in the Zoo’s 61 year history when the Zoo hosted over 600,000 guests.
The Birmingham Zoo also saw record attendance at most of its major events, including “Zoo, Brews & Full Moon Bar-B-Que”, “Boo at the Zoo” and “ZooLight Safari”. New events and attractions like “Fairytales & Frogs”, “PikaZoo”, “Dino Discovery” and “Dino-Nite” were big draws throughout the year.
Birmingham Zoo President and CEO, Dr. William R. Foster says, “I am pleased to announce that for the sixth consecutive year the Birmingham Zoo has set an all-time attendance record. I would like to thank the community for helping to achieve this record. It would not have been possible without the continuous support of the Board, donors, members, volunteers, staff and the entire Birmingham community. On behalf of everyone here at the Birmingham Zoo, we will continue to strive to be a top tourist attraction for the state and to serve the Birmingham community by ‘Inspiring Passion for the Natural World.’ Thank you for trusting us to take care of over 900 animals who reside at the Birmingham Zoo.”
With 2017 here, the Birmingham Zoo has even more exciting plans for new events and attractions that will excite and invigorate the community and guests. Stay tuned.
