What is a Docent, You Ask?
Docent is the Latin term for “teacher”

A Docent is a specially trained volunteer who shares his or her knowledge of the Zoo with children and families at animal programs, education events and classes at the Birmingham Zoo.

Docent duties will vary as much as the volunteers themselves! If you love learning, love animals and love sharing what you know with others, then the Zoo’s Docent program might be for you.

Calling all Future Docents:

Do you love animals and people? Are you passionate about wildlife and different habitats? Would you like to be a part of the Birmingham Zoo’s efforts to help visitors understand and appreciate nature? Then you might want to consider becoming a Birmingham Zoo Docent!

Work in Progress..

We are currently redesigning our Docent training process into a six-week course. Our first redesigned course will take place in January 2014. Please check back for more information.

In the meantime, there are many other volunteer opportunities at the Zoo! If you have any questions about the Docent training program, please contact volunteers@birminghamzoo.com. We look forward to seeing you at the Zoo!
