Director
Letter from the
Dear Members,
As we gear up for a busy and fun-filled summer at the
Birmingham Zoo, I would like to take this opportunity
to share with you some of the highlights from our spring
season.
We are honored to announce the Zoo was recently awarded
the prestigious 4-star rating for good governance, sound
fiscal management and commitment to accountability
and transparency by Charity Navigator. Only 19% of
the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received
at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations. Charity
Navigator’s recognition indicates that the Birmingham Zoo
outperforms most other charities in America.
The Birmingham Zoo and Alabama Power recently joined
forces to install solar panels in the Junior League of
Birmingham – Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo. The Zoo will
receive renewable energy certificates from Alabama Power,
which will result in a portion of the Zoo’s electrical energy
consumption to become “green energy.” These efforts
support the Zoo’s mission by exploring the sustainability
of solar generation as a future, economic energy supply
option.
In March, the Zoo had a very successful Spring Break.
Guests enjoyed such favorites as the Red Diamond Sea Lion
Splash Show, Predator Zone, Boma Encounter, Lorikeet
Aviary and much more.
In April, the Zoo celebrated its Born to be Wild campaign
with the introduction of The Baby Bunch and the grand
opening of The Jane H. Brock sponsors Soaring Safari
Zipline Adventure powered by Red Mountain Park. The
Birmingham Zoo invites guests of all ages to glide through
the treetops of Alabama Wilds and reach heights 20 feet
above ground level. Throughout the
Zoo, new life is thriving with our
seven species in The Baby Bunch,
so be sure to stop by and see the latest arrivals on exhibit
around the Birmingham Zoo.
May brought much excitement as the Birmingham
Zoo’s Junior Board held the fourth annual Tails in
the Trails event. Guests enjoyed live music, food,
beverages and animal greetings in the Junior League of
Birmingham – Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo. Net proceeds
from the event went to benefit the Barbara Ingalls Shook
Black Bear Trail, the new black bear exhibit coming soon to
the Birmingham Zoo.
This summer, each day at the Zoo presents exciting
activities, interactive exhibits, Wildlife Shows and much
more. Be sure to mark your calendars for upcoming events
including $5 Fun Days, July 25-26, August 2-3 and August
9-10.
Bring your family and friends to Alabama’s must-see
attraction, where a day’s visit creates memories that last
a lifetime. Renew your Membership online today or stop
by the Zoo’s Membership Office during your next visit to
continue creating these memories for you and your family.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, Zoo staff and the
hundreds of animals that enrich the lives of our guests
every day, thank you for your support. We look forward to
seeing you soon and often.
Sincerely,
William R. Foster, D.V.M.
