Boo at the Zoo Volunteer Information

It’s that time of year again The Birmingham Zoo is looking for volunteers to make Boo at the Zoo (BATZ) a fun and exciting events for kid and families.  This event is sponsored by Wells Fargo.  It takes about 100 volunteers per night to make Boo at the Zoo a success! The dates below are currently are dates that have the biggest volunteer needs. 

*All shifts are from 4p-9p. We are not able to accommodate split shifts.

10/19- 74 Openings

10/21- 65 Openings

10/22- 74 Openings

10/23- 66 Openings

10/24- 61 Openings

10/28- 72 Openings

10/31- 76 Openings



  • Must be at least 14 years of age
  • If you are 18 or over you must be affiliated with a group, organization, business or corporation in order to be considered for this opportunity
  • Volunteers must sign up in advance
  • All volunteers must bring a signed release form. (Teens) Those under 18 must have a parent’s or guardian’s signature on their form in order to volunteer.
  • Must attend an orientation session on your first volunteer shift
  • All volunteers must sign in and sign out when leaving the Zoo

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (All positions are assigned the night of volunteering)

  • The positions below are just some of the many opportunities during Boo at the Zoo:
  • Train crossing volunteers
  • Fall festivities volunteers (Games & Activities on Henley Park)
  • Candy trail volunteers
  • Greeters

ATTIRE: Although optional, we would like the volunteers to dress in family-friendly costumes. Please remember that costumes cannot be gory, suggestive, too scary or revealing. The Zoo staff and I will be the final judge. Please remember that this event is for kids from 6 months to about 12 years of age. We cannot have costumes that are inappropriate. If you think that we might say no, then please alter your attire. We don’t want to send anyone home because of costumes or behavior. Masks are not permitted. Boo at the Zoo is an outdoor event plan on frequent exposure to the outside elements.

DINNER AND VALUABLES: Please do not bring anything of value to the Zoo. The Zoo is not responsible for any lost items. The Zoo does not have a place to leave purses or other items. If you leave your items, you will have to be responsible for any losses. Please eat before you come to this event. You should have time for breaks but they may be at odd times due to scheduling.

WEATHER: Please remember to dress according to the weather. If it is raining, please call the Zoo to inquire about the status of Boo at the Zoo at 205-879-0409.
