Learning Pods at the Zoo

Your Birmingham Zoo is excited to announce Learning Pods at the Zoo! This unique program for 2nd through 6th graders offers a safe, supportive, and fun environment for students who are participating in virtual learning. The Zoo will provide an internet connection and a safe, socially distanced workspace for each student. Zoo Education staff will support students during their real-time learning sessions and while they complete assessments. Staff will be on hand to help students troubleshoot, provide supervision, and give educational fun brain breaks. Outside of designated virtual learning times, students will benefit from outdoor activities, guided Zoo tours, and animal interactions. Students will also experience various engaging and unique activities that support their physical fitness, social emotional learning, and Inspire Passion to Conserve the Natural World.

Please Note: While we are there to support students in their virtual learning, staff cannot provide continuous, one on one instruction for children. Program participants should have age appropriate maturity to support independent learning. Students will be required to bring their devices and supplies with them as designated by their school district. Please reach out to us if you are experiencing difficulty accessing a device for your student.

The Birmingham Zoo’s Education Department takes the safety and wellbeing of our students, staff and animals very seriously. While we cannot ensure 100% protection from exposure to the COVID-19 virus, Learning Pods at the Zoo will follow guidelines issued by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), American Camp Association (ACA), Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH) to assist in providing the safest environment possible for our students.  Some of these precautions include:

  • Each class will have a maximum of 10 students.
  • Each morning, all staff and students will be screened for any observable illness, including cough or respiratory distress, and to confirm temperature below 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Staff and students who have a temperature greater than 100.4 degrees will not be permitted into the program.
  • If a student develops any symptoms during the day, they will be immediately relocated to a dedicated area to await parental/guardian pick-up.
  • Classes will be kept separate from one another with very limited interactions with other Learning Pods or Zoo guests.
  • Students will be required to bring their devices and supplies with them as designated by their school district, as well as lunches/snacks a refillable water bottle and face coverings.
  • Staff are required to wear face coverings. Students are required to wear face coverings when not in their dedicated learning spaces and appropriate social distancing is not possible.
  • Increased vigilance will be given to our already thorough cleaning and disinfecting procedures.
  • Instructors will teach and reinforce good hand and respiratory hygiene and social distancing. Sanitation policies will include hand washing/sanitizing before all snacks, meals and upon re-entry into the classroom. Any specialized learning tools used by Birmingham Zoo will be sanitized in between uses.
