W
ith summer in full swing, the Birmingham Zoo’s
resident sea lions, Giovanni (Gio) and Farley,
are getting ready for the Red Diamond Sea
Lion Splash Show! These sea lions are turning six-years-old
this June, and they are growing fast. Farley is now around
190
pounds and is getting to look a lot bigger than Gio, who
weighs about 150 pounds. If you see one of the sea lions sitting
out on the beach area of their exhibit, that might be Gio
relaxing in the sun. If you hear one of them “quacking” like a
duck, it’s probably Farley talking up a storm. Every year, they
learn more and more behaviors, and this year is no exception.
Gio and Farley have learned a lot since last summer, and we
are eager to give them the opportunity to show off their skills.
This year, the Red Diamond Sea Lion Splash Show is themed
“
A Day in the Life of a Sea Lion.” The show will provide a
chance to learn more about these amazing animals, while
incorporating ways you can help their wild counterparts, as
well as the wildlife here in Birmingham. Enjoying time with
the family at the Red Diamond Sea Lion Splash Show is the
perfect way to spend a sunny day this summer. Shows occur
at 10am and 2pm every day. Be sure to get there early and
grab your seats because the gates close right on time! We look
forward to seeing you!
