HAPPY . . . INTERNATIONAL . . . SLOTH . . . DAY! Sorry it took us so long to announce this awesome day, but we finally made it happen! Don't you take too long meeting our Hoffmann's Two-Toed Sloth named Reynardo during your next visit to the Zoo! . FUN FACTS: The Hoffman's two-toed sloth is one of the world's slowest mammals—so sedentary that algae grows on its furry coat. The plant gives it a greenish tint that is useful camouflage in the trees of its Central and South American rain forest home. Sloths are identified by the number of long, prominent claws that they have on each front foot. There are both two-toed and three-toed sloths! 🦓 ZEBRA STRIPES : White with black or black with white? 🤔 This is one of the most-asked questions about zebras, and the answer varies depending on who you ask! Zebras are generally thought to have white coats with black or brown stripes, because of the white on their belly where stripes end. However, as it turns out, zebras have black skin under their black-and-white striped the answer really depends on how you look at it! . FUN FACTS: A zebra's stripes can help protect them from predators! When zebras are grouped together, their combined stripes make it hard for a lion or leopard to pick out one zebra to chase. In fact, zebra stripes are unique to each individual and researchers have used zebras’ stripe patterns for help with identification. It might seem like a zebra is a zebra, but there are three (3) different species: plains, mountain, and Grevy’s zebras. Different zebra species have different types of stripes, from narrow to wide with varying colors! For more info about zebras, visit our friends at @sandiegozoo . Your Zoo is home to a small herd of Grant's zebras of the plains species! Make sure to visit them in Trails of Africa during your next visit. . #GrantsZebra #Zebra #BhamZoo #BirminghmaZoo Gianna @giannaszoodiary

FLAMINGO HABITAT: We know you miss seeing our flock of flamingos at the Lagoon just as much as we do! But there is good news...the habitat renovation is moving right along and progress has been great! All the work is being contained inside the area so guests can still walk by and watch as the new habitat takes shape. In the meantime, our flamingos are doing well in their temporary home behind-the-scenes and all seem to have settled in nicely! . . #Flamingo #BhamZoo #BirminghamZoo Robert H., Zoo Services Lead
