Dear Valued Guest & Supporter,
In light of the drastic spread of COVID-19, after much consideration, the Birmingham Zoo will be temporarily closing to the public effective Thursday, March 19, 2020. COVID-19 is having a dramatic impact on our lives, families and community. I want you to know this decision was made in the best interest and health of our guests, staff, volunteers, and the animals in our care.
As your President and CEO, I believe closing the Zoo until further notice is the correct and responsible choice. As an organization, we support the efforts being made to slow the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus in our community.
We have been rigorously following the recommendations from state health and government officials, and out of an abundance of caution around health risks associated with COVID-19, we believe now is the time to take the most significant step to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being.
Our greatest priority is to continue providing exceptional and vital care to our animals 24 hours a day, seven days a week, no matter the circumstance. Our dedicated team of Animal Care Professionals and veterinary staff will remain on-site to take care of our animals.
Zoo operations staff and other selected employees will continue working at the Zoo to perform key roles critical to our infrastructure. During the closing time we will continue our rigorous sanitation and cleaning practices to ensure that our facilities remain thoroughly disinfected. Until the Zoo re-opens to the public, all March animal activities, programs and events, including camps, are canceled.
The Birmingham Zoo and other Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) members will continue to work together proactively to protect the health of guests and staff in our facilities, and animals in our care. We are grateful for your unwavering support and encourage everyone to please take all precautions to keep you and your family safe during this time.
