Birmingham Zoo Coronavirus COVID-19 : Statement from the President and CEO

Dear Valued Guest & Supporter,

We appreciate the trust you place in your Birmingham Zoo every time you visit.  As you are planning your next visit, you likely have questions about our efforts to address and manage Coronavirus (COVID-19). I want you to know that your health and safety is our first priority.

Out of an abundance of caution around health risks associated with COVID-19, we are taking appropriate action to prepare for any escalation of the outbreak and are closely monitoring the developments.  We are following the most current recommendations and alerts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH), and Jefferson County Department of Health (JCDH), as well as other federal and local health authorities.

We’ve always taken great pride in our rigorous sanitation standards and we know this is more important than ever right now. Our dedicated custodial team is onsite daily during visitor hours taking extra steps beyond standard cleaning practices to ensure that our facilities are thoroughly disinfected. Like other Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) member facilities, we’re taking guidance from the CDC, which recommends regular cleaning as one of the most important preventive measures we can take. This includes public and office restrooms, high contact surfaces like door handles, staff breakrooms and kitchens, and eateries on Zoo grounds. Rest assured, every area of the Zoo is being monitored constantly and thoroughly cleaned regularly.

As your President and CEO, I am also committed to taking care of our staff, volunteers and animal family. We are providing resources on preventive self-care and proper sanitation for staff and volunteers to mitigate transmission of the virus, in addition to emphasizing respiratory etiquette and the importance of staying home when sick.

Animal welfare and care is vitally important to us and I want to assure you that our animals are healthy, safe, and thriving. The Birmingham Zoo has long standing animal health protocols and practices to ensure the wellbeing of the animals at the Zoo. Our extraordinary Animal Care Professionals and veterinary team will continue to provide all our animals with dedicated and exemplary care, while your Zoo remains proactive in our attention to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At this time, the Birmingham Zoo will remain open during regular business hours of Monday through Sunday from 9am until 5pm. We will continue to follow CDC guidelines as the situation evolves and as we get new information on the severity and spread of the virus.

Your Birmingham Zoo and other AZA members will continue to work together proactively to protect the health of the animals in our care, and guests and staff in our facilities.

Thank you for your tremendous support, your unwavering patience, and your trust in the Birmingham Zoo. Please take all precautions to keep you and your family safe during this time, your wellbeing is very important to us. I look forward to us Inspiring Passion to Conserve the Natural World together.
