The Birmingham Zoo is pleased to announce that Dr. Stephanie Braccini Slade, PhD has joined the Birmingham Zoo team as the Vice President of Living Collections. This position is responsible for overseeing habitat design, animal health and welfare, conservation, horticulture and general operations.

Dr. Slade comes to the Zoo with over 15 years of experience working in Zoos, most previously as the Curator of Mammals at Zoo Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition, Dr. Slade has a M.A. in Experimental Psychology and a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Psychology, is a published author, and led a TED Talk on Why Animals in Zoos Need Choice.

“We are very excited to welcome Dr. Slade to the Birmingham Zoo team,” says Chris Pfefferkorn, Birmingham Zoo Senior Vice President. “As the Zoo continues to grow and evolve, this new position will serve as an integral part of the upcoming Capital Campaign Phase III construction of the new Asian Passage habitats. We are confident in Dr. Slade’s ability to work towards the Zoo’s mission to ‘Inspire Passion for the Natural World’ through this process.”
