Heads! The Birmingham Zoo proudly announces the birth of its latest family member, a male reticulated giraffe weighing 125 pounds and measuring 5 feet and 5 inches tall.
Born Monday morning, the calf was on his feet within an hour of delivery and is in good health. The new arrival is nursing well and appears to have bonded with his mother, Juno.
Zoo staff have been careful to keep their distance, because of Juno’s protective instincts of her first offspring. The almost 6 year old mom came to the Zoo in 2002. The father, Morefu, came to the Zoo in 1987.
Giraffes are the world’s tallest land mammal and can grow up to 17 feet tall. Unlike many hoofed animals, giraffes can see in color. They have very keen vision and hearing and have the highest blood pressure of any mammal. Giraffes can run 30 to 35 miles per hour and can jump over obstacles 5 to 9 feet high.
The Zoo is holding a naming contest for the new arrival. Visit the handsome hoofed one to see his curious personality then enter the contest in the Zoo’s Membership Office or online.
Be sure to visit our new addition soon!
