Memorial Day weekend is a great time to visit the Zoo! Come out and join in all the fun the Zoo has to offer over this long holiday weekend. Feed the giraffes, take a camel ride, check out a Wildlife Show, visit Granny’s Butterfly Garden and much more! Be sure to enjoy the Lion Cubs’ 1st Birthday Party on May 26th from 11am to 1pm.

In honor of this holiday, all active and retired military and their dependents get free admission to the Zoo on May 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th with valid military identification.

Beginning May 26th, the Zoo will be open for extended summertime hours from 9am to 7pm on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Plan Your Summer Vacation to the Galapagos Islands

Join Dr. William Foster and his wife, Jean Cecil, for an 11 day vacation (July 26-August 5, 2012) to the Galapagos Islands. Dr. Foster is leading a memorable trip touring the Galapagos Islands aboard the Integrity, a private yacht. The tour is provided by International Nature and Cultural Adventures (INCA) and the Birmingham Zoo.

Tails in the Trails

The Birmingham Zoo’s Junior Board will hold its 2nd annual spring event, Tails in the Trails, on May 17th from 5:30 to 9pm in Trails of Africa. Guests can enjoy live music, food, cocktails and animal encounters while viewing the elephants on exhibit. To purchase tickets for Tails in the Trails, call 205.879.0409. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

The 7th annual Zoo Run will be a morning 5k race giving you and your family the opportunity to enjoy the Zoo for the rest of the day. The Zoo will have four Kid Races: Turtle Trot, Chicken Cha Cha, Groundhog Gallop, and Serval Strut. These courses will go through the Birmingham Zoo, including the Trails of Africa exhibit. The Birmingham Zoo is reaching new heights with the opening of the new Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter! One of the largest giraffe habitats in the Southeast, the Kiwanis Giraffe Encounter allows guests to enjoy an up-close and personal interaction with the Zoo’s five giraffes. The exhibit has a 4,000 square-foot deck that provides multiple access points for feeding and viewing the giraffes. The cost of feeding is $3 for members and non-members throughout the season.

Baby Orangutan Gets Her Name!

The Birmingham Zoo congratulates Evan Lucia as the winner of the Orangutan Naming Contest! The winning name is Nairi. Five-year-old Evan attends God’s House Kindergarten in Vestavia. He chose Nairi because he liked the sound of the name and its Indonesian meaning – “kind one.” Evan will receive an Adopt-an-Animal package for Nairi, a tour of the Animal Nutrition Center, a Zoo Fun Pack, a photo opportunity with an educational animal that includes a Keeper, and a private Keeper chat. The Zoo raised nearly $1000. All donations benefit Orangutan Outreach, whose mission is to protect orangutans in their native habitat while providing care for orphaned and displaced orangutans. Come to the Zoo to view Nairi on exhibit as she enjoys time with her mother.
