May 15, 2010 – 5th Annual Zoo Run

Help the Orangutan Conservatory by competing in the 5th Annual Zoo Run at the Birmingham Zoo. Enjoy a morning run and then a full day at the zoo following the event. With new courses, prizes and a day at the Zoo, this year's Zoo Run will be the most successful yet! So rise and shine with us and enjoy a great day as the Birmingham Chapter of AAZK hosts the 5th Annual Zoo Run!

Food: Breakfast food items will be available from 8-10am in the Zoo Education Classroom in the Children’s Zoo. Water, Soft Drinks, and Coffee will be provided. You must have a bracelet to enter the breakfast area. Your bracelet will be marked once you have been through to ensure all runners get to eat.

5K Awards: Join us at the Children’s Zoo Breezeway at 9:00 a.m. Awards will be given to 5k participants in the categories of top 3 male and female runners in each age group and the top overall male and female runner.

Door Prizes: Door Prizes will be handed out during the award ceremony, please have your ticket out during this time. (Adults tickets will be there runner numbers; children will receive these tickets the day of the race).

Weather: There will be no rain dates. We will still be running in rain or snow, but if lightning occurs, we will have to cancel the race for the safety of the participants.

 

Races

 

5K Run Wild for Orangutans: This race/run/walk is open to any age. The start of the race will be in the parking lot outside the Zoo’s Entrance and will finish inside the zoo at the Children’s Zoo. Lineup will start at 7:15am. We ask those that are walking, or jogging just for fun, to stay near the back of the start line to leave room for the racers up front. All 5K runners need to wear their running numbers for timing purposes. This will be provided in your runner’s packet. Be sure to bring your runner’s number on race day. The course includes various terrain types and several sharp turns.

Turtle Trot: Ages 0-2. This race is for children that are just beginning to crawl to children just learning to walk. The “race” will take place in the Children Zoo fountain area. Please have your child at the fountain 15 minutes before race time. Every child will receive a medal, and the top 3 boys & girls will receive a certificate.

Chicken Cha-Cha: Ages 3-4. This race course starts in front of the Children’s Zoo barn. Parents are allowed to run with their children. The course is a little over 100 ft long. Please meet in front of the Children’s Zoo Barn (by the carousel) 5 minutes before race time.

Zebra Zip: Ages 5-6. This race course starts in the Savannah at the giraffe barn and ends near the zebra exhibit. Parents are encouraged to cheer beside the course, but not encouraged to run with their children. Please meet in front of the Giraffe exhibit about 15 minutes before race time. Every child will receive a medal, and the top 3 boys and girls will be awarded a certificate.

Cheetah Challenge: Ages 7-12. This course starts in front of the Camel Ride attraction and ending near the children’s zoo mountains. We would encourage parents not to run with their children in this race; don’t worry, the course will be monitored by staff. Please meet in front of the Camel Ride attraction (near the Predator Building.) 15 minutes before race time. Every child will receive a medal, and the top 3 boys & girls will receive certificates.

General Information

• No pets allowed on zoo grounds.
• For the safety of all runners no strollers may be used in the races.
• Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the 5K race begins and 15 minutes prior to children’s races.
• Bathrooms will be available starting at 6:30a.m. in the Children’s Zoo.
• Please make sure all members of your party have bracelet passes in order to enter the Children’s Zoo.
• Bracelets purchased online in advance will be included in runner’s packets. Remember to bring your bracelet with you on race day. No replacement bracelets will be given on race day, but additional bracelets may be purchased.
• Online registration is available at www.birminghamzoo.com. All participants will receive cotton shirts.
