homeschoolThe Birmingham Zoo has exciting, in-depth home school classes for students in First through Ninth grade. Class sessions consist of activities such as animal visits, class discussions, in-class work, labs and guided tours of the Zoo. Classes are designed to build on one another; however students are not required to attend all sessions.

Space is limited, and classes fill up quickly. Please register early to guarantee you child a space.

The 1st-6th grade classes will explore a wide variety of topics, beginning with water ecosystems and their importance.  Food chains, life cycles, the water cycle, conservation, Zookeeper duties and other fascinating topics will be also be studied during this semester.  Each student will learn grade-appropriate information based upon Alabama State Department of Education standards for Science, Math, Social Sciences and English and Language Arts.

The 7th-9th grade classes will continue to focus on the characteristics of biomes around the world, with an emphasis on the plants and animals that live within them. Using the Habitat Ecology Learning Program curriculum developed by the Bronx Zoo, students will also learn about the native people living in each biome and the challenges they face.  This course will provide students with opportunities to debate issues affecting these environments and present information about organisms within each biome. Each student will learn grade-appropriate information based upon Alabama State Department of Education standards for Science, Math, Social Sciences and English and Language Arts.

Education Summer Office Hours:
9:00AM – 3:00PM, Sunday – Saturday, until August 17, 2014.
