homeschoolThe Birmingham Zoo has exciting, in-depth home school classes for students in First through Ninth grade. Class sessions consist of activities such as animal visits, class discussions, in-class work, labs and guided tours of the Zoo. Classes are designed to build on one another; however students are not required to attend all sessions.

Space is limited, and classes fill up quickly. Please register early to guarantee you child a space.

1st-2nd grade
This year the 1st-2nd grade classes will explore a variety of topics related to classification. Topics also include the Scientific method. Detailed examinations of each class of animals, from fish to mammals and their unique life cycles will be completed. Each class will learn grade-appropriate information based upon Alabama State Department Education Standards for Science, Math, Social Sciences and English and Language Arts.

3rd-4th grade
This year the 3rd-4th grade classes will explore a variety of topics related to classification. Other topics include the use of microscopes and the Scientific method. Detailed examinations of each class of animals, from fish to mammals and their unique life cycles, as well as study of other kingdoms and phyla will be completed. Each class will learn grade-appropriate information based upon Alabama State Department Education Standards for Science, Math, Social Sciences and English and Language Arts.

5th-6th grade
This year the 5th-6th grade classes will explore a variety of topics related to classification. Other topics include cells and symbiotic relationships. Detailed examinations of the different kingdoms and phyla of organisms will be completed. Dissections may be included for further study. Each class will learn grade-appropriate information based upon Alabama State Department Education Standards for Science, Math, Social Sciences and English and Language Arts.

7th-9th grade
The classes for 7th-9th grade this year will explore classification of the six kingdoms of organisms. Detailed discussions of the characteristics of each kingdom, phylum, class and/or order will be included in each class. Classes will involve use of microscopes and examination of preserved specimens. Some classes may involve dissection as a tool for learning. Each class will learn grade-appropriate information based upon Alabama State Department Education Standards for Science, Math, Social Sciences and English and Language Arts.
