Students 1st Grade through 12th Grade
Science education with a wild side!
The Birmingham Zoo Education Department has exciting, in-depth home school science classes for students in 1st through 12th grade. Classes can consist of animal visits, class discussions, in-class work, activities, labs, guided tours of the Zoo and homework. Some class materials will be sent home to aid students in their studies. Classes are designed to build on one another, but students are not required to attend all topics.
The limited spacing in these classes will fill up quickly. Please register in advance to guarantee a space.

1st Grade – 3rd Grade

Thursdays: 9:30am – 11:30am

This course serves as an introductory class on various animal and plant topics. The classes in this course will provide students with insight on how people, plants and animals are connected.
4th Grade – 6th Grade

This course focuses on the role of energy and resources in our environment with an emphasis on their effects to our daily lives.
7th Grade – 9th Grade

This course will focus on the role of energy in the environment with an emphasis on how it effects plants, animals and people. The classes in this course will provide students with an opportunity to connect the relationships between the physics, chemistry and biology of energy and its importance.
9th Grade – 12th Grade

This advanced course will focus on global environmental issues with an emphasis on effects of these issues in Alabama. The classes in this course will provide students with a sound basis of ecological principles needed to deal with these issues. The information, activities and labs in the class will be drawn from the textbook “Environmental Science” by Karen Arms, as well as a variety of other sources.
Attending Class:
- Parent/caregivers and their children should check-in for class at the membership office before the scheduled class time, and should them proceed to the educational building via the route from inside of the Zoo.*
- Parents/caregivers and their children may arrive up to 10 minutes before the scheduled start time for their class.
- Parents/caregivers and their children who arrive 10 minutes past the scheduled start time for class will not be allowed to attend class.
- Parents/caregivers are not permitted to attend class one the child is under the supervision of their class’s teacher.

Picking-up Children:
- Children will be available for pickup in the breezeway at the end of class.
- Children must be picked up within 15 minutes of the end of class.
Rescheduling or Refunding Your Class Appointment:
- Individuals that cannot attend a class must call (205) 397-3877 no less than 24 hours in advance of the date of the class to be eligible for a transfer.
- All class reservations that are transferred to another date are subject to space availability within each class.
- A $5 processing fee will be charged on all refund requests.
- If refunding a registration fee effects a discount that was applied to the original transaction, the difference of the discount as it pertains to all registrations within the transaction must be paid by the customer.
Discounts:
- To receive a member discount, all children that you wish to enroll in class must be covered by the Birmingham Zoo membership.
- Receive 10% off of your total bill when you purchase 10 or more classes in on transaction!
Same Day Registration:
- Registrations for a class that are completed on the same day that the class was scheduled will be subject to a $2 charge in addition to the standard class price.
