Every zoo animal has a unique protective covering. Beginning with cave painters, artists have engineered rendering techniques to represent the diverse textures of animals. Campers will observe an array of zoo animals with different types of fur patterns or body coverings and will practice art techniques to represent the animal of their choice. Each day we will work in a different medium. The daily topics are:
Monday: Scales and Shells. Campers will study reptiles at the zoo and will complete their own image of a zoo reptile using both pencil and ink.
Tuesday: Feathers. Campers will study bird anatomy and the ways birds use their feathers and will look at techniques artists use to represent birds and feathers. They will create their own images of birds using oil pastels and watercolor washes.
Wednesday: Skin and Gills.  Campers will create their own images of frogs, toads and fish using tempera paint.
Thursday: Fur.
Campers will explore the zoo in search of the patterns on mammal’s fur. They will practice acrylic painting techniques to create an image of their favorite zoo mammal.
Friday: Insect Anatomy.
Campers will look at insects from the zoo collection including spiders and butterflies. They will create original images of these insects using print making techniques.
