On Saturday, September 13, 2014, the Birmingham Zoo hosted its largest fundraising event of the year, ZooGala 2014, at its Trails of Africa exhibit. The event was sponsored by IBERIABANK, a partner of the Birmingham Zoo for 10 years. All funds raised at ZooGala directly benefit the Birmingham Zoo’s operational efforts and help the Zoo continue its mission of “Inspiring Passion for the Natural World.” Honorary Chairs of this year’s event were Don and Anna James. More than 400 guests arrived to the Moroccan themed event. The event showcased a Moroccan souk with belly dancers and elaborate displays of colorful tents and lanterns as music by the 14 Karat Gold Dance Band created the perfect ambiance for the occasion. To kick off the evening, guests were greeted by Zoo animals such as a Crowned pigeon, fennec fox, an American alligator, a barn owl and more. ZooGala also featured a jewelry showcase from Empire Diamond Corporation.
At 7pm, guests of this cocktail attire affair mingled and enjoyed drinks throughout the event area and then visited the Moroccan market stations for dinner by Kathy G. and Company. The menu consisted of Moroccan inspired dishes such as Tandori Style Chicken Breast over Grilled Rosemary Bruschetta with Fava Bean Pesto and Micro Greens, Grilled Fresh Gulf Prawns Kebabs with Red Coconut Curry and Lamb, Vidalia Onions, Dried Dates and Golden Raisins.
Guests enjoyed drinks, dancing and dessert at the Boogie with the Beasts after party from 9pm- 11pm presented by the Birmingham Zoo Junior Board.
This year’s silent auction was a huge success and included exciting packages, parties, getaways and more. Guests were able to bid on Frank Fleming bronze sculptures, the “Ultimate” Family Zoo Membership, trips to South Carolina and Saint Lucia, private Zoo events, a necklace from Empire Diamond Corporation and other amazing items.
